Bingo is a relatively simple game of chance, much like other gambling games such as blackjack or roulette, except in bingo, the player gets no say in the way they play. With blackjack or roulette, the player is able to choose which cards to play or which numbers to choose, but in bingo the player can only play with the numbers they are given. At the start of a game of bingo, all the players collect little bingo number cards which contain numbers. In the UK, bingo is played with 90 balls on a 9×3 card.

A game of bingo is presided over by a caller, who randomly selects the numbers, and then reads them aloud to the players. It is also their job to validate any potential winners, and then announce the winners if their cards have the correct numbers. At the start of the game, the callers will also announce the prizes available to win before they start.

The numbers are usually selected by pulling counters out from a bag, picking balls out of a revolving cage or simply using a random number generator. When the numbers are called, they are usually associated with special calls that relate to their form or the way they look on paper; such as 55 may be read as “fifty-five, all the fives” or 88 as “two fat ladies”. If the caller reads out the number on a player’s card, they then dab the number with a special “dauber” pen used in bingo venues to mark that it has been called out.

The players can win in any one of three ways:
• A single line – where the player gets all the numbers on a horizontal line
• Two lines – where the player gets all the numbers on two horizontal lines
• Full House – where the player gets all the numbers on the bingo card

When a player wins, they must present themselves as a winner by shouting “bingo!” or “full house!” to alert the caller. Once this has been verified, the player can then collect their prize.
